    Learned a new trick today---

Hot Damn---I learned something new today!!! I had to slip across town to see a customer (well actually, it was so nice I wanted to get out for a drive in the roadster). While I was down in the south end, I decided to stop at BusyBee and buy a knurling tool, as they are on sale. I believe that I only tried knurling once before, in grade 9 machine shop, and it was a disaster. ---Anyways, I paid $25 for the knurling tool, and did a big search on my machining websites to gather information on how to use it. I had a 2" length of 1" diameter aluminum scrap, so I chucked it up and ---Voila---It worked like a charm.
My real motivation was to be able to make nice, machined aluminum peices with a 1/4-20 thread in the center and a knurled outer diameter to hold the new Lexan windows into the hotrod.

Hey Pat, I know I am new here, but I have to ask, do you ever use capitals or periods? You have some very interesting things to say, but it takes me forever to figure it out. No offense meant. Edd
God, guns, cars and 1 wife, I would say I have it all.

Pat is a very smart fellow around all things mechanical. It takes a bit of effort to read his posts, but look for the wisdom in his answers, not the structure of his prose.

And, as a finishing shot, here are the knurled knobs installed, as seen from inside the car, and from outside when the windows are not in place.

    Knurling

Nice job!! Always remember to keep the job awash with fluid, water is OK as it stops the bits getting caught up.

Have the knobs clear anodised to stop them discoloring or corroding.

when working with alum or steel on the lathe or mill i have used engine oil cut with mineral spirts keeps things from sticking . i use a small acid bush or spray bottle. add mix to work. this works good but may smoke abit .was well as some other cutting fluids . some guys use spray on furniture polish
