Where was I when I got the news that Buddy Holly was dead? I was in 8TH grade Elementary and in first period when the principal came over the PA and gave the news that the plane carrying ,Holly, Richardson and Valens had crashed killing every one on board. The girls in class started crying and screaming ,and the principal had the whole school come to the auditorium to listen to radio broadcasts about the crash. It was something that I never forgot.
In later years my new sister-in-law reveled to me after I had bought a some Big Bopper records that she had lived across the street from him in the middle 50's and knew him well .She said that he was one of the most talented people she had ever known. He was a DJ at radio station KLVI ( I think thats the call letters ,been over 40 years or so!)could play the guitar and piano and wrote songs and was a very good dancer too! This station was in Beaumont ,Texas.
In my later teen years I became a DJ and I'll never forget a little promo that the station manager recorded for an oldies show that I hosted at one time. He said"The old songs are the best, for they always contain a memory of where you first heard them"This is true because I remember what I was doing or where I was when I first heard their songs that I liked.
