A thread hijack - sorry

I've been running McAfee Internet Security for the last couple of years and while it is a pretty good internet safety program, it really slows my computers down. I rebuilt my desktop a couple of days ago with a new ASUS motherboard(it had a USB connectivity problem) and a faster AMD CPU. This improved it a lot - but it is still slower then it should be. I put McAfee on my new laptop set up for wireless operation - and instead of needing a watch to see how long it takes to boot up - an hour glass is more appropriate.

There are some alternates listed here (freebies) and am curious if there are other good choices - then MAYBE I can dump McAfee (Norton/Symentec from past personal & business experiences are even worse) and use one of those.

(As a note - I get better computer information from knowledgeable folks on this site then any geek site. I don't have to wade through a bunch of their personal ego generated jargon - I'm a mechanic, not a geek)
