That comes up for me occasionally. Shut it down, turn off all power or unplug the system and disconnect your in line to the modem. Give it 5 minutes, reconnect, power up and try it again. Works for me.

I had a problem similar to that about a year ago. After rebooting the cable modem and the wi-fi router I had no problems with my laptops but my desktop continued to have the problem. Went our and got a new and inexpensive network interface card (NIC) and plugged it in to an open buss and no more problems. Didn't have to run the software since XP recognized the card and setup appropriately.

Sometimes, for unknown reasons, the embedded network devices on the motherboard will go bad. First make sure you have an open bus slot and also what type it is, and then get an inexpensive replacement card. I think I bought a Linksys card for about $12. Works fine. You can either get a gigabit card or a 10/100 card, really doesn't matter because the network will dictate the actual speed of data transfer.
