One of our kids and his family are in central Iowa for a funeral. They called last night, but I don't know yet if they were able to get their flight out this morning, or not. A new experience for them, as compared to Arizona! It's so boring here! :-)
I grew up in central Illinois, and one interesting fact is that a tornado went across our high school football field.......two years in a row! Can you say "tornado alley?"
Yup, several friends in Iowa now under 10-15 feet of water at their shops (and some of their homes). My hearts go out to all of them both those that I know, and those that I do not. Went through one large flood in my lifetime helping my cousins move the important stuff out of their home in Kingston, PA back in 1972 (Hurricane Agnes), we all made it out of there with minutes to spare after the dam upstream broke. Water 30 feet deep on their property, sends chills up my spine just sitting here and typing it out........

Four confirmed dead, all 13-14 year-olds, and at least 60 injured. Don't know the extent of the injuries yet. Pretty tough for the parents. Guess they had almost no warning, being out in the woods. The news media says that 1,800 acres of forest was totally leveled.
Interstate 80 is now closed at exit 266 in eastern Iowa water over the bridge.
The Cedar river is expected to go another 7' higher there.
Interstate 380 over the Iowa river is 6" from being closed with river expected to go another 7' higher.
All of the bridges across the Cedar river in Cedar Rapids are closed. Four of the levies in Cedar Rapids just broke, so most of downtown is going under as we speak.
There is a big meeting this morning to determine if all of the Iowa City Bridges across the Iowa will be closed.
If they do there will be no way to get across Iowa for the next couple of weeks.
Having been a Scout leader I have been to that camp in several occasions and I am at a loss. The camp itself was very beautiful with all of the mature trees, rolling hills, fantastic valleys where you could see all kinds of wildlife.
There are 4 buildings that are located onthe property. 3 for the campers and 1 for a caretaker. All of them are completely destroyed. Almost all of the 1800 acres of trees are leveled.
It is very sad that things like this happen. I don't know any of the kids, but my heart goes out to all of the families involved.
There are stories of heroism arising from this. A 14 year old layed his body over that of a younger, extremely frightened scout and protected him from harm. The old scout was injured, but stayed behind after the storm to make sure that others were recieving medical attention.
There was a DR at the camp. He is a scout Master and a surgeon. According to what I have heard the kids set up a triage area and were tending to the injured just like they had been taught through their training.
These are post cards on an auction site of my hometown. The river has flooded many times but a few times were really bad. 1913 and 1937 as a kid I can remember having to take a ferry across the water to get to the city. That was in the late 40’s and early 50’s the water had gone from the river into the city at least 2 miles and was on the second floor of houses. Since then they put up floodgates, and levees. I feel for you guys that are in this situation today.

And for some reason, I feel that the brave folks of Iowa will rise to the occasion with more poise than those from the Big Easy. We still have displaced Katrina victims all over the Gulf Coast.:(
Living on the Gulf, flooding is always in the back of our minds. My prayers are with will all these poor folks.
Hi guys, just a little update on the flooding here in the Iowa City/Coralville area. It is BAD!!! We had Shirley's Mustang in a storage facility that should never have been affected but flooding.. Never say never. When the river banks, levies, and sandbags caved the water went everywhere. Her car is now under 6' of water. Our insurance policy doesn't say anything about flooding either for or against, so it is a 50/50 shot at this time.
It has been inspirational to see the thousands and thousands of young people out there working 24 hrs. a day for a week. A lot of their hard back breaking labor turned out to be futile, but give them their due, when one section would go bad they all just moved to save another building farther back. These young people are great!!!!!!!!!
People will come together in time of need; and they do deserve thanks for their hard work, and effort. I'm sorry to hear about the Mustang, and hope your insurance takes care of it. Stay safe, and lets hope this ends soon and the water goes down.

I saw a jaw dropping picture in this mornings paper. Here is the picture, sorry so small. It is in Cedar Rapids Iowa. 24,000 homeless. Ya its like 20 homes stuck on a bridge.
At my age an state of mine I don't think I could deal with that. All I can say is God give them strength.

A few levees have broke, more will possibly follow. What a mess!!!! If you could call it "good news", when a levee breaks upstream it will limit the flooding downstream.... Talk about a lose-lose proposition....
Just a thought, but are we losing more battles with Mother Nature because we keep trying to control the elements or are things just getting worse climate wise????
