I heard a great story the other day, will paraphrase to make as short as possible.
A man dies and finds himself on a dirt road in the middle of the country, and there waiting for him is his faithful dog that had passed years before. they greet each other and then start off down the road to see where they are.
After a while when they are both getting tired and thirsty they come along side a beautiful set of gold gates and inside they see rolling green hills, flowing streams and beautiful trees. at the gate there is a man dressed all in white and the man with the dog asks him,"do you have any water?"
the man in white answers,"of course, we have the sweetest, coolest water you'll ever have, please come in. but your dog cannot come with you." The man looks down at his dog, back at the man in white and says,"thanks anyways, we'll keep going." and starts back down the road with his dog.
some time later, now very thirsty and exhausted they come to a wood fence with a gate hanging open by one hinge, and what looks like a large farm in the background. leaning on the fence is an old farmer. the man asks,"would you happen to have any water?"
the old man tells him,"sure, there's a pump over there, help yourself." "and my dog?" the man asks. "of course, there's a bowl by the pump" the old man says.
the man walks over and fills the bowl and while the dog is drinking he asks the old man,"excuse me, but where is this?" "This is heaven." the old man replies.
"well then what is that place I passed earlier, it looks nice."
"that's hell". the old man informs him
"well shouldn't you put up a sign or something, warning people?"
"no, we let them sort out the people who would leave their best friends behind".
sorry about your loss.
