Well the cam in my SBC 350 is basically the stock Z28 cam with 1.6 rockers so the only thing left is to put 1.5 rockers on the intake side. The rear tires are already as big as the fenders allow and I already have a 700 R4, but now I am glad I have a spare set of 1.5 ratio roller rockers. I will still leave the 1.6 rockers on the exhaust valves for a slight increase in torque. A simple ratio of my 3.55 rear gear compared to the stock Z28 and the OD gear scales the 17 mpg (highway) of a '76 Z28 to about 24 mpg in the lighter A roadster. After that the only further thing would be to install a vacuum gauge to monitor fuel usage so as others have said occasional cruising will be the limit until they can get that new oil out of Colorado/ND. Hey maybe those 882 heads from the '76 Vette are just right now?! If the price of gas ever goes down (?) I can put the 1.6 rockers back on the intake valves for a little more lift.
Confession Time Relief: A year ago when I installed the 1.6 roller rockers I "lost" two of the little rubber wedges that go under the valve cover hold downs. They popped off because I did not know they were there and although I made replacements out of inner tube rubber I was biting my nails wondering if one or both fell down an oil return hole into the block where they could plug an oil passage. This week I cleaned out the garage workshop pretty good and amazingly in the sweep-up dust there were BOTH rubber wedges on the floor! Whew! The opposite to Murphy's Law is that you can't be wrong all the time!

Denny I'm with you, if I ever get my truck done, and believe me, the cost is the limiting factor these days, I'll drive it no matter how crappy the gas milage is, and enjoy every minute of it!:D **) :LOL:Quote:

3.52 for regular here in west point. i get 8 miles to the gallon and enjoy every minute of it. Though $10.00 a weekend does not last long
Way up here in the corner of washington state where we have 3 oil refineries in a 50 mile radius the 87 gas is going for $3.59 a gallon and the rich boys that drive their big boy diesel pickups to work are paying @ $4.50 a gal and the Bio diesel is $4.79 a gallon......makes my litttle chevy sprint look good as I'm driving by as their filling up........:p
If it makes you feel better, UK gas is ~$9.22/gallon for regular, ~$9.79 for premium:eek: . And they do have a bunch of early American V8 iron
I went out yesterday morning(Thursday) about 10:00 and the Mobil station near my home was $3.719. Two hours later, it was 3.739. On Wednesday morning, it had been "only" $3.679. I filled up at $3569 two miles away ( I will not buy Exxon/Mobil)
Rep Dennis Kucinich - about the only thing that I see going for him - he does have a very nice looking trophy wife http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_Kucinich
As far as oil companies raping us - they make in the neighborhood of 9-10 cents a gallon, with Exxon Mobil a couple of cents more/gallon, which is what the local guy on the corner makes. Don forgot one thing on his list - the speculators at the world's investment trading companies.
Heck, if it gets too much more expensive($4+/gal), I'll cancel my yearly trip to York (been every year but one since 1986), and since I haven't paid my $68 swap meet fees yet, no big deal except the chance to meet up with some folks:CRY: .
Just filled my Comet up yesterday and gas here has jumped 20¢ in the last week. Our low is $3.89, then $3.99, and $4.09. Diesel is $4.39 or $4.49 depending on which station you go to. I really wouldn't be surprised to see it hit $5 a gallon here this SUmmer. Last year our high was $4.79.

I heard another speech this morning full of the usual requests for freedom from special interest lobbyists, but the party of the speechmaker is the party that scuttled ANWAR oil development and amazingly I was surprised to hear even Bill O'Reilly say last night that environmental concerns in ANWAR are more important than the oil. Maybe O'Reilly should get the "Caribou Award"? I need to keep my cool but it is amazing that such a critical issue can be muddled in politics to such an extent. As mentioned by NTFDAY and IC2 O'Reilly did note the negative effect of speculators.

Not sure O'Reilly is pro econut after listening to some of his rant yesterday, but since I was in and out of the garage and the range of the radio, didn't hear it all so may have taken it out of context. Remember - politics are about politicians keeping their jobs, not about personal convictions - genetically, they don't have any:LOL: :LOL:Quote:

I found that I could not penetrate 5/16" bolts (either grade 8 or grade 5) for castle nut cotter pins but that I could buy repro 5/16" bolts that were meant to hold the large bell housing on the stock Model A to the stock A block as the right length and size WITH drill holes for a cotter pin from Brattons Antiques Auto parts. So I am having the universals drilled across to accept the 5/16" bolts through the D-shaft and cotter-pinned on the other side. Just keep busy, the opiate of the masses (or was that religion?), while the politicians make speeches to make themselves look good!

Sounds like you're doing what I did a while back with my column u-joints - it takes a good drill and a drill press to get through that material. Good ol' Bratton's - I just got my latest catalog a week or two ago. They probably ship faster then anyone and for the most part are very competitively priced.Quote:

Gotta get back out - I'm hoping to bolt the body back on the chassis for the last time early to mid next week and still have a couple of panels to wet sand and buff. My wife, I'm sure, will have some "honey-do its NOW" this weekend so probably little progress then.

O'Reilly has one over-riding motivator when it comes to reporting on oil issues. None of the CEOs will go on his show so he's got a vendetta going..................as much as admitted it in one of his mutter comments at the end of a report a couple years ago.
Yeah, the entire oil thing is becoming more and more less significant anyway. About every 5,000 miles or so, unless you leave 'em parked for a long time in the rain. Yeah, you could go longer but then the neighbors would not get to see you working on your toys.
Oil changes are now cheap compared to gas ................
