    Question Identify Rear End

I am installing a 460 and a C6 automatic into a 1989 Mustang. I asked the new owner what engine came in it. He said 5.0 V8. I checked the VIN and it said turbocharged 4 cylinder and automatic. My concern is what type of rear end may be in this vehicle? Since I am blind, can you tell me what to feel for to make a positive ID? If you think I am pulling your leg, you missed watching Car Crazy in May of 2007.
    Thanks a lot.

does it have a rear differential cover, if so how many bolts, or is it a closed case? odds are its a 7.5 or if you are luckier it could be an 8.8. if it is an 8.8 it can take a decent amount of torture, a 460 highly modified may be a tad much, but with a mild built 460 it would get you by just fine. and in the perfect world a new 9" would be the way to go. if the rear you have will need completely gone through with a new gaer set on top of that, you might as well find a used 9" and go spend the money on it instead though!!!!!!!

He will need more than luck if he can get traction with the car with a 460 installed.

But, but, but... The owner will be informed of the short-coming of that rear. The car is NOT mine, I am just helping out a fellow rodder.
By the way, the rear has a xheet metal cover with 10 bolts. Now what do you think?

Moser and Currie make bolt in 9" rear ends for the Mustangs. With an automatic an 8.8 would do, too.

89 with a 5.0 got the 8.8 trac loc rear. And offhand I don't know of any turbo 4 cyls that came in 89 Stangs. I do know the Pace Car edition and some SVO's came with them tho. Those were 79 to 86 only I beleive.

here is the skinny on the rear ends. the first is a 7.5, the 2nd is an 8.8. both are 10 bolt but they are a different configuration. also ive got a 460 in my fox body 1980 and i get fantastic traction, but ive got a koni coil over set up, the stock set up probably wont trac too good.

If it's 8.8, All '87-'93 Mustang 8.8 were a lockers, if its a 5.0 car. and all GT's were 5.0 and had quad shocks, the mount for them is on the housing top behind the back plate.
I'm not sure, but I believe '86 and older were 7.5 with a big counter weight on the pumpkin.
