Thread: Disaster at store

So, I'm bringing my Great Dane home from town and I
stop by a local feed store. Our boy is still growing and has outgrown
his collar and it's OK to bring your guy into the store as long as he's on
a leash.
No problem....The store owner has been asking me to bring one of our
guys in for months.
Everything is going well and all of the store personal are over petting
our "attention hog" until all of a sudden he spots this 10 ft tall stuffed
bear near the check out stand. This thing is 10 feet plus and has it's
claws and fangs out. It's a pretty impressive display. I've seen it
hundreds of times so, I sorta don't see it.........
Our boy "Abe" sees it and all of his fur stands on end like one of those
Halloween black cats you see every year. He takes about two leaps with
me bouncing along behind and his front paws land right on the chest of
this stuffed Brown Bear.
Since Abe weighs 205 lbs the Bear shudders and over it goes, flat on it's back.
By this time, I've reigned him in with a good scolding as I was pretty
embarrassed and wondering if he did any damaged.
The store owner was laughing and said he was pretty impressed at how
protective he was. I left with instructions to "bring him back anytime".
Still, I don't see how I can take him out in public again because I don't
want to take the risk.
I guess you have to be prepared for anything if you're a responsible pet owner.

Good story, great dog! We have had greyhounds and Irish Wolfhounds, I know what you mean about "responsible pet-owner"! They're all big pussycats, but the size allows them to do damage without really intending to. My biggest dog was an Irish, 44" at the shoulder and 220 pounds, no fat on him anywhere. He could stand on all fours and lick my face. I ain't a little guy either! He'd rear up and put his front paws on my shoulders and kinda look down at me from there.

Our dog had to be put down this past summer, so we've been without a pooch for awhile. Last week my daughter, against our wishes, went out an bought a new puppy. She found a mutt that she fell in love with and brought it home. It's momma was a german shepard and it's dad a mastiff. I think we are going to have to add on to the house, if my daughter and her "puppy" don't move out soon.

Puppy at 12 weeks aready weighs more than our last dog at twelve years.

Just think of the damage he'll do when he grow's up. He's a very good looking dog. Our lab had to be put down earlier this year, and we only have our little mutt, I miss having a big dog.

I had a friend with a great dane. One day a lady was jogging by his house with my out front on my bike and she starts running and he sees her and goes after her. She freaks out thinking it's going to attack and starts screaming and ran at me and grabbed me! He jumped on her and then really attacked because she freaked out and grabbed me/pushed me to the ground to try and cover her. He finally stopped attacking her and she got up screaming at me all pissed off. I let her leave and then went up and told her that it wasn't my dog and that it really isn't like that but her reaction made him do that. He was a little aggresive though, if you messed with his ears or rode a bike next to him he would bite you.
I have two big boned German Shephards and have had them before. They are great dogs IMO and good gaurd dogs. I had a Siberian Husky with blue eyes until someone stole him. He was the hardest dog to train (they say the second hardest dog in the world to train) and they love to run and chew up everything and bring every animal they kill home.
Sorry to take over your thread, I figured I'd share those with you guys.

205# and still growing... wow. I'd hate to figure out how to discipline a dog that outweighs me!

The yellow lab I have now has aparently reached his full size, although he might put on a few more pounds of muscle, but I really hoped he would get bigger. He is 75#.
