Time for a New Garage

I'm going to put this here because it's going to house Rita lol. When we moved here about 17 yrs. ago, we had to do a lot of work and fix many things. One of those things that was not on the list was the garage. The roof was showing its age at the time and the cement was flaking apart everywhere and it was barley 24x24, so we decided not to put any money into it. Last year it was getting too bad to put off much longer, so we started making plans. The new one is 30x40, two doors in the front and one comes in from the side towards the rear. We also added a small bathroom in it so we can redo our current bathroom soon which is also needed badly (finally the last room lol). We tried to figure out a way to attach it to the house, but our basement step arrangement screwed up any plan without a major re arrangement inside the house which wasn't worth it. Instead, we connected the roof line and put heated cement under the sidewalk to the garage and have water runoff going away from that area. One thing kinda neat is the guy doing the work grew up on this place, and he does incredible work. I may have to take over pretty quick though because the budget is blown pretty bad so I need to slow down the check book a bit.

Looks like you've thought well about it. Having a verandah from the house over to the entrance is going to be very welcome during winter months.

I did a door arrangement like yours on an attached garage we added on to the first house we bought when we moved out here. It worked out great. I could get 2 cars in the front and still have a long term project or another car along the back wall.

It was also great on nice days having all three doors open for the light and cross breeze.

At the time it was also the only work space I had so it didn’t take too long to outgrow it but I still miss it sometimes though.

Looks like you've thought well about it. Having a verandah from the house over to the entrance is going to be very welcome during winter months.

It will be nice! We also pushed the garage 12 inches further away from the house so if need be I can drive my skid loader in between there with a little more room than before for snow removal.

The interior will have a steel ceiling and OSB on the walls. As for siding, that's the great mystery, we can't decide. Our house has a vinyl on it and I really don't want to put vinyl on the garage so we're debating between LP siding and steel. If we do steal, I'm afraid that's going to open up a can of worms and I'll end up redoing the whole house with it because it won't match. We're seeing more and more houses around us using regular Barn steel for siding. If it's done right, it looks good. Will probably end up putting vinyl on it, LOL.

It does flow pretty good, we're thinking about using some vertical siding in The gables to break up the length of the whole structure.

There are several new "barndeminiums" that have gone up in my area, and they are an amazing look for property with a few acres around for space. The metal siding looks great when it's done right, and no long term maintenance makes it a big plus.

It was kind of fun taking the roof off, I think what we're going to do is put vinyl back on the bottom and run steel vertical in the Gable of the garage and change the Gable of the house to the same still so they both match. At least that's what we decided after church today, it will probably be different tomorrow LOL

Another good thought before you line the interior is to use lots and lots of pegboard. I don't know if that's available over in the States: it's extremely strong artificial wall cladding with small holes every 1" with the next layer of holes offset underneath.
The pegs come in a variety of shapes and sizes with each one having two prongs to support practically whatever you want to mount to the board.
Double prongs to hang the stuff you want to be hung are available too.
From wrecking bars to paint brushes, hose clamps to turnbuckles, garden trowels to secateurs, 3 ft pipe wrenches to 4" crescent spanners.
Better to do it before you put the cladding on.

It's handy stuff and will fill up usually unusable spaces.
