If you could source the drive train, 4.7 and tranny, from a 04 or so Dodge Dakota that would make cool swap.
The one I have in my 04 will light the tires and has given me zero problems over the years. Just my $.02 opinion.

I heard that's a pretty good engine; is it the same basic architecture at the 5.2 and the 5.9?

I'm not sure, but it's easy to work on. To me the major drawback is the restrictive exhaust. It averages between 19- 20 mpg on the highway and 14-15 in town if I keep my foot out of it which isn't bad considering it's about aerodynamic as a barn door.
