Hey farm house sink your moving up
Really looks good
Thanks guys, on the farm house sink was one of the non-negotiables on Kari's list. Many years of mistakes have got me to the point where I'm almost somewhat comfortable with doing carpentry. I remember my first big job was putting vinyl siding on our house in town. I had all the siding bought and no idea how to put it on, I made a lot of trips to our church around the corner seeing how they did it lol. 20 years later, the house still looks good so I must have done all right. I'm not an expert, there's just not much I'm too afraid to try lol.
Great job, Seth!
I had to laugh at, "... I made a lot of trips to our church..." I've certainly had my share of projects where God alone knows how I finished them and no one will ever convince me that God doesn't care about the details. A remodel project will always test your faith!!
Regards,
Glenn
I've enjoyed watching your kitchen come together because I know what you're going through. Well.., sort of.:HMMM: I did ours two years ago; it wasn't quite as big a job as yours, but no less frustrating at times. My house is a 1957 vintage concrete block home built on a slab (common construction for Florida). Somebody remodeled the tiny little kitchen sometime in the 1960s, enlarged it to a galley kitchen, and it was really looking tired.:( We gutted it out to the bare walls (and one section to the studs). I won't go into all the details, but it took my wife and me just over 9 weeks to finish it all including removing the ceramic tile floors and replacing them with new laminate floors in the kitchen, dining room, living room, and hallway. By the time we finished I had invented some new cusswords (wore out all the old ones:rolleyes:) and was seriously doubting my sanity. Anyway, it's done and the wife loves it, so it was all worth it.:3dSMILE: Here's a couple of picks of before and after.
under cabinet lights really do set things off
Yes, the under cabinet lights are great when preparing food. We also put lights above the cabinets and put plastic tiles on the ceiling to cover the old cracked plaster. The only light in the kitchen that isn't LED is the bulb in the oven, so when they're all on it's only pulling about 150 watts.:3dSMILE:
Sorry for hijacking your thread; I'll shut up now...:o
Wow! That turned out very nice! Mine is wired for under counter lights but I'm going to put that one off for a while. I'm getting tired of it 🙂
Double post
Thanks Seth. I used LED light bars that I bought at Home Depot. They come in different lengths and can be linked end-to-end. They aren't real expensive and come with the hardware to mount them. I used them on top and underneath.
Very nice work Seth and Jim! I'm hoping I don't have to do ours in this house. It was supposed to be a 5yr deal and we're past that. LMAO!
Haven't had much to post lately but after taking the summer off, we finally got the kitchen just about wrapped up. Only a little bit of base board trim to do and the trim around one door which may be on hold till we remodel the porch/bathroom. This was a stupid big project but I'm glad it's done, Kari said when the kitchen is done, I can go work on one of my Dodges.:LOL::LOL: Bragging rights go out the first person that can find Rita in the kitchen!
I nearly forgot about the counter top, we had a local guy make us one out of Black Walnut. The place is called Live Edge and they took two slabs and put them together like you see with the black epoxy river and the a clear epoxy top. They did a really nice job.
Didn't your momma tell you "not to park on the dinning room hutch".....
Nice job! btw
Gotta love live edge black walnut! I've got ~450 board feet on the drying rack right now, mostly 5/4 thick, but a few 10/4.
Ba, Ba, Ba, BAM!
Winner Winner Chicken Dinner! Christian made that for us in shop class in school. It was made on a laser engraver. It's pretty neat.
5/4 = five quarter, or 1.250" 1 1/4" …. 10/4 is 10 quarter or 2.500" 2 1/2"
The "oversize" is usually left on so the wood can be milled to thickness and finished smooth to a "whole" dimension.
Exactly! Slabs are rough cut in quarters - the language of the sawyer - and after dry, planed smooth to consistent thickness. While a "standard" finished board (S4S, or Surfaced 4 Sides) is 3/4" thick, I like a bit more bulk in most projects so I mill to 5/4 or 1.25" which gives me a finished board about an inch thick, or a bit more. You can always plane down more, or resaw the board for thinner stock. I had a couple of nice logs about 13+" diameter but only around 6' long so I had took a couple of 5/4 slabs, then cut a couple of slabs from the center section at 2 1/2" for something like a sofa table, entry hall table, or a nice bench with a more substantial thickness, and then finished with more 5/4 slabs on each of the two.
i love me some walnut .. i know where just about every walnut tree is within a 5 mile radius of me anywho back 45 years ago when i worked in a cabinet shop we made a 4 posted walnut bed for a lady in California .. it was Polly Holliday .. Flo of kiss my grits from the Alice sitcom .. i remember it costing more than 4 grand ...
Seth, behind that nice laser engraved sign I see a string of mini-Christmas lights! I did the same when we moved in to this home, and they work great! My electrician put a string of plugs on Romex atop the upper cabinets from a common switch, and the mini-lights are perfect. Your kitchen looks amazing!
I wasn't sure if it was worth it but I'm glad I did it. It doesn't do much for lighting but the glow does look neat.
Just recently picked up a truck load of Cherry that has been air dried over 40 years. Beautiful stuff
Wow, how you find something like that? I bet they knew what to ask for it !
Seth, it looks really nice! I really like that counter top! Allyson and I have been thinking of doing something similar in ours. Let me know when you're getting ready to move. I hear they might be placing a tech at our sewer city location. I will need an acreage with a shop if I can get the position.
.
I'm embarrassed to tell you how long it took me to figure out you meant Sioux City.lol.
LOL! I didn't get till you said it! I was thinking he was going to work at a sewage plant!!~!!! LOL! Now who's embarrassed????
