I order my frame rails bent to spec . They are out of 2x4 11 guage tube. This was the first time I tried this us ally just used the orginal frame off the cars.
Hey car looks like its in great shape, I'll be watching your progress, have fun !
Cool! A new build starting! What's the plan for the end result. The '38's got good lines, so lots of options. Don't think I've ever seen the big tube bent to spec like that, but it should work great, I would think. Looking forward to watching your progress.
You seem to be doing fine, but if you need it - http://www.clubhotrod.com/shop-talk/...es-thread.html
Techies pectoral that's where I got the tubes bent, while I was at it I picked up their 12 pt cage for a 38
Rspears thanks for the info this all seems to take a little while to set down and put together.
My plan for the 38 is to go maybe pro touring, autocross.after going to shows for the last 20 years. I thought It would be fun to have a car that would autocross ,dragrace pretty much that I can beat on that will still show and go.
I have the frame rails, front end is from progressive using a 89 corvette spindles a arms, rack is out of a 98 tunrderbird.the rear suspension will be a 89 corvette that is narrowed 7 inches. Wheels are us mags 18x10 for the front with 285,35x18 tires back is 335,30x19 on 19x12. For power, I have a ls3 out of a 2010 Camaro with the 6 speed auto.
but right now I am at the eye doctor getti g a piece of something out of my eye from Saturday using a cutoff wheel on a pencil grinder. it don't matter how safe you are it just takes one time to forget an them you have to pay for it. Jonathan
Great build.. glad you decided to post the pics and let us share "the ride" with you. Thanks.
Sounds exciting too!
Looking forward to this, sounds like a great
Combination!
Rich
Keep posting on this............it really is a good start!!
Looking forward to watching this build. I have seen some very cool 38's at car shows.
Bummer about your eye. Some lessons are harder learned than others.
I have a fairly new scar on my forearm as a permanent reminder that an angle grinder is always deserving of your full attention.
Nice project! It sounds like you have a great build going on here. Keep the updates coming.
Her is some pictures of the frame with the front and rear suspension Attachment 63345
rear is a dana 44 with 308 or 310 gears. It came out of a manual car.I got lucky an found the half shafts and dog bones at a local swap meet they were already shortened 3 and half inches for 60 bucks. when I asked the man about them he said I bought them because they were polished, they are supposed to fit a c4 but they are to short.it was The exact length I was going to have to shorten mine. That is probably my lucky break of this build.
Thanks to everybody that has replied. I worked on this all winter it will take a while to catch up to where I am at now.
Isn't there a "saying" that goes like , even a blind squirrel finds the nut once in a while.
You just got yours, I wish I could trip over those more often! LOL.
Very nice ...can't wait to see some more work pics!
I'm back, after working 12 hours nights for the last several months. Attachment 64202now I figured out I am going to have to post a picture at a time to control the pictures.
These photos show I got the rearend narrowed 7 inches, the swaybar put in the frame on the rear. I don't have coil overs yet so I set it up with solid rods all around to set ride height.
The front end I wound up widening the frame rails 2 inches over the original frame to let all the stock ls3 fit in between.
Nice work!
Very nice.
Looks like you've flipped over this car!
Looks great!
Attachment 64316Ok next after a lot of measuring, it time to bring in the body an get it ready to see if it fits.Attachment 64317
Time to break out the plasma cutter and seperate the body from the frame. Jonathan
After a lot of figuring. I decided that it would be just as easy to cut the body loose of the floor and remove.[ATTACH]

I wound up with this.
Wow great project with cool parts and frame! Looking forward to following this thread too!
The body looks like it will scrub up good and apart from the panel damage of the quarter panel, appears to be rust free. I too will be watching this old Chevy Coupe been mated up to the excellent frame you have built.
Thanks for the replies everyone!

Made me a cart an rolled it outside an sandblasted the inside to see how much rot I had one the lower sections of the body. Jonathan
I don't know what happened to taking pictures of mating the body with the frame? I got it mounted and figured out my wheel offsets an ordered my wheels an tires.Attachment 64326
Attachment 64327
So after mounting the body on all four corners. An getting the attitude I wanted. I replaced several sections on the lower rockers. It was ready for some wheels.
After going to the street rod nationals last year an talking to all the wheel vendors there an pricing wheels that I liked! I went with us mag. Thay were very informative an wanted to make what I wanted for a very reasonable price.

The rims I believe we're called torinos, fronts were 18 X 10 with a 7 in. Backspace and the rears are 19 X 12 with a 7 inch backspace. Sounds wide but trying to put as much meat to the ground as I can.
For my tires I went with nitto nt05. The frontsecond are 285/35 r18 and the rear are 335/30r19. Front tires wound up being 11.5 inches wide, and the rear wound up being 13.5 inches wide.

I was pleased when I got the rims an tires mounted. Plenty of meat to put on the ground. Jonathan
After looking thru my pictures, I realized that I ordered my wheels an tires to fit the frame ,an was going to make the body fit what I had. Here is my roller with the wheels on it.

Now I am looking forward to seeing those big feet tucked up under the fenders. I have never seen those style of rims before and at first thought, humm, but now with tyres fitted and on the frame, it is looking cool.
Those are very nice! It's going to look sweet!
Time to see what the body will need. Extra trimming to get it into place.

After cuting out the rear wheel wells it set down on the frame with little problem. Body is actually pretty lite at this time. Jonathan
In case you need more room for the fronts-the earlier C4 suspensions were a couple inches narrower and I think it was in the control arms--------
Thanks Jerry but that what this is is a c4. It was a 4 speed car with 3.08s in the rear. Got it about as narrow as I could, going to still have to widen the fenders front and rear about an inch or inch an half.

The point I'm trying to make---the 2 or 3 first years of the C4 vette were narrower than the later years---------if you used later year control arms, you should look at maybe using earlier C4 arms for narrower track and won't have to widen the fronts ???????????
That looks really nice! The wider fenders may give it an unusual look too, which I think would go with the wide low stance you're shooting for.
Post # 30 bottom pic-----can you move the upper arms to the inside of those brackets and then fab a new lower mount the same distance in narrower??
Thanks for the suggestions. I went an checked,an with me moving the frame rails out to let the motor fit. I don't have the room to narrow the front anymore.
Attachment 64354
Lock to lock I have extally 1 in clearance between the wheel and frame. Jonathan
