I think I may have said it before, but I would love to build a track T or other speedster of the pre-1935 era build and style and use it to race in local historic and vintage race groups. This might be my first venture into a flathead unless I can find an old Offenhauser or Miller motor ;)

You might have mentioned it on the forum, but I don't think you have on the two threads I've been on with you. Real science getting hp from flatheads.

Bob, I always wanted to grow a nice beard but it just doesn't come out enough. Maybe not enough shitface to fertilize the follicles? I'll keep trying. But I do have gray hair along the lines of yours and we both look quite distinguished if I do say so myself.

I also seem to have a dearth of photographers following me around to take my picture. I don't have anything handy with a car theme on this laptop so I only came up with these.

This one is when Philadelphia was attacked by giant alligators from Louisiana and one almost bit my head off until my son saved me right after he took this photo. I think I have a big tongue.:

^ thanks. I had no updates to report on the '32 so I figured I might as well add a little levity to the thread.

We have sailing in common too. I'm a graduate of California Maritime Academy with a USCG Unlimited Tonnage Open Ocean license, but prior to ships I had a Cal 40 that I single handed from Long Beach to Muluge, Mexico. Old, fast ex race boat that I outfitted for cruising.

Both pictures taken with the then new Sony digital camera circa 2000, when file sizes were about 25 kb, and storage was on a 1.44 mb floppy.

Nice pics! On the sail boats, we don't see many large ones in this area. There seems to be a lack of water for that. :LOL:

Your signature sure caught my attention. A drag car (is it the '68 'Vette?) diesel powered. Talk about boost and torque down low in the rpm band. If you have the time, tell me more, or copy & paste what you have told others that have asked. My interest is high.

Thanks, I'm up to speed now. The 5.9 @ 1150 lbs weighs almost as much as my car. I've toyed with the idea of diesel. Audi for the European market makes an all aluminum 4.2 that is 40 lbs lighter than a sbc, and in stock trim lays down 326 hp. Gale Banks could probably double that number.

I looked through your diesel Corvette thread and that is definitely like no other! I really like diesels and that's a very unique build.

Mine is progressing slowly but surely. The front corners of the oil pan had to be modified with cuts and welds to clear the headers and that turned out good. Now the headers are fully mounted and most of the exhaust is done; we extended the twin 2-1/2" pipes all the way to the back where the polished bumper bar is (my buddy made that) and it looks so nice I'm going to skip the exhaust tips until further notice or forever. We're thinking of cutting the ends at a slight slash cut and polishing from the axle back. The bases for my bomber seats are done but not installed yet; we made those out of maple and mahogany and decided to enclose the 6X9 speakers in each base in case I want to hear music (maybe when I'm parked and necking with the wife since I'm not sure how loud this will be yet). I'm waiting for the upholstery guy to finish the padding and then the seats are in and just about done and ready to roll. When we took out the Lokar shifter that was in it when I bought the car we realized it was a hacked up piece of crap and couldn't even shift into low (never tried that while driving or I would have known) and otherwise felt pretty poor. I don't even think it was made for a TH350. I didn't really want a ratchet shifter, trying to maintain a flavor of street hot rod vs drag car, so I got a new Lokar and it's like night and day and feels so positive I'm looking forward to shifting it pretty soon. As I mentioned in my thread asking about finned valve covers, as soon as I get some pics with the TriStar covers to entertain the TriStar folks, I'm swapping them for Trans-Dapt finned valve covers and a matching oval air cleaner. It's getting close! :)

What are talking about, Bob? That shot of your interior looks excellent to me. It also reflects the car is used and driven and not a garage queen or show only car.

Don't get to drive it much. I only have 17,220 miles on it.

How long did it take you to put the 17k on it?

Here's my seat bases, hot off the press. I like that traditional Ford V8 symbol inlaid in front of each base. Like I said before, I have my 6X9 speakers built into each base in case I want to turn on the sounds (one of those stealth hidden little stereo thingies that came with the car).

I don't know how you have those 6X9's firing in what direction, but to add to the quality you might consider a cross over for a small soft dome tweeter that faces toward you and the passenger for each channel to compliment the bass and midrange of your 6X9s.

Got out of trucking during de-regulation and didn't have anymore diesels till 2000 when I bought a F-350. Nick, from the other thread, this is the truck that prompted me to get my 1st G-Tech. Over time wound up with a larger turbo, intercooler, injectors and exhaust.

I work for a company that was founded by my buddy whose last name is Pirkle which is what's on the door of your truck.

I mentioned locomotives since a device we manufacture is installed on virtually every diesel-electric locomotive (i.e. all freight locos) in North America and many in China (being built in partnership with GE). A lot of locomotive hardware are interesting components that might interest hot rod people.

The top engine looks like a two stroke. The last container ship I served on had a 9 cylinder Wartsila-Sulzer diesel. Direct drive to prop, produced around 65,000 hp at 118 rpm. For astern would stop the engine, engineers would change valve timing and the engine would be re-started in reverse, not a fast process. The last vessel I worked on was a diesel-electric, using (7) 4.6 MW medium speed Cat gen-sets for a total of 32 MW. Hotel and drilling loads (it was a drill ship) was about 1 MW, the rest was available for holding position in winds and currents. I had (6) 5,000 hp electric thrusters. If I have to use most all of it (white knuckle time) I was burning about 1,000 gallons of diesel per hour. Here is one of the (7) 4.6 MW gen-sets.

And this might be the engine in my next sailboat. I'm planning on hybrid diesel-electric with LiFePO4 cells. This small diesel is turning an alternator with diodes for DC charging. I already use an inverter for my AC loads and an AC gen-set would be redundant, besides much heavier for the same KW output over a DC gen-set charger. And you can run at a chosen rpm for efficiency and noise reduction instead of a fixed rpm for AC frequency.

Not the same company as on your truck, coincidentally just the same name. Since I knew about his mom and dad, it wasn't the same immediate family, either.

The device is a self-operating freeze protection dump valve for the locomotive cooling system. It's really the default industry standard for this application. Class 1 locomotives (i.e. all the major RR operators) don't use antifreeze so they're susceptible to freeze damage under various conditions, not running and unattended. Better to dump the coolant than cause hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage.

That of course begs the question, why do they not use antifreeze?

Until recently I thought I knew and I thought it was because of heat rejection being less than with just water (with corrosion inhibitors). That would result in a "slight" loss of power which in a locomotive can mean the difference between pulling 100 freight cars or 110, and over the entire operation that amounts to millions of dollars difference.

More recently I learned (still researching more on this so take it with a grain of salt) that it's because some of these big diesels (at least most of the ones used on locomotives) aren't designed to keep the coolant completely out of the lube oil and in fact there is some oil pollution. If a little water gets into the oil, they are designed to withstand that and keep on trucking. But if antifreeze gets into the oil, it seriously compromises lubrication.

A friend is a RR engineer (train driver) and pointed me to this link once when I was curious about some facts - Diesel Locomotive FAQ See Number 16.

Thank you for that link, Roger. That confirms the reasons I've heard over the last 40 years working with all the Class 1 RR's in the U.S. and EMD (now part of Caterpillar; formerly part of GM) and GE who manufacture the loco's. Even Alco was still operating back when I first started.

When my dad first went to work for GE, the first two things I recall the first day when moving to Schenectady in their '41 Chebbie was the mega monster GE plant, then driving down Erie Blvd (which was the site and now filled in Erie Canal) and past ALCO and seeing several brand new STEAM engines sitting ouside of their shops - which of course made my day as my grandfather was an engineer with Michigan Central. 40,000 plus worked at GE and another 16,000 at ALCO. There might be 3-4000 at GE now and ALCO is gone and Schenectady, "The City That Lights and Hauls the World" is a dump

This GT is only a small part of the project - add a generator, a steam turbine, and an HRSG(boiler), inlet and exhaust system along with train loads of other claptrap to make up a 3-400MW plant.
