Thanks for posting that one, Steve. That was some day for sure, it made all his hard work worthwhile and we were in shock when he won the two trophies.
Here is a picture we took right after the presentation.

And a little video of that day............

Thank you, Michael !
Tonight when I went to the shop to feed the strays Dan went with me and got to see the rpu I mocked up last night. He likes the look too, and now all I have to do is figure out what rear suspension I am going to run so we can put the frame on the jig and install the proper rear crossmember.
As I mentioned, I would like to use the model a rear crossmember and model t rear spring, same as I have on my 27, but I also have a set of coil overs and those would give me more adjustability as far as dialing in the final ride height. They will not be visable once the bed is on, so it wouidn't take away from the old look I want. I just have to give it some thought.
I also have a three bar rear setup from Suicide Doors that Dan had custom made for his rpu when it was bagged, and I could use that setup in conjunction with the coil overs. My only concern about that is it might cramp the room I want to use for my gas tank. So many decisions when putting 10 pounds into a 5 pound bag.

Tough choices Don. I think the custom 3 bar for the fact it's made for it, with the coil overs would feel nice going down the road. But things like gas tanks do have a way of redirecting a build! Retro is always cool, yet modern stability and ride comfort is a big bonus on those long trips. It would be a bummer to fill the small bed with a gas tank, but a keg might look cool back there, or in front like the one Ken gave you! I'm sure whatever you chose will look and function like it was the only choice. Maybe move stuff around on the mock up?"

I know, Steve. Today I stopped by the shop to do some measuring and looking to see what would fit where in the bed. I want the bed to be very short, about 32 inches or so. My rear slicks are 30 inches in diameter and I need to leave 2-3 inches between them and the back of the body. If I do the 32 inch bed it will end up right at the back of the slicks with nothing sticking out further. That is how I think I want it.
I can visualize how I can get an aluminum radiator back there that is about 19 high x 29 wide and stand it straight up and down at the very back of the bed. With a couple of pusher electric fans and louvers in the tailgate I think it will cool the Olds ok. The extral length of the lines from the engine clear back to the radiator should kill some heat too.
As for the rear suspension, I am leaning more and more toward the coil overs and three bar setup. It does make a nice clean setup, but I still have to factor in a gas tank. I woud use the one Ken gave me, but it is only 2 gallons and is too pretty to put gas in.
I might convert it to hold Captain Morgan.........that would be the hit of the car shows.
That Moon tank is going to be proudly displayed up front.

Thanks, Dave. What is really cool about all the trophies that are handed out at the Billetproof events is that they are handmade by rodders who volunteer to make them, and they are really works of art. The one for Best Truck is cool, and the one for Best of Show is HUGE, and HEAVY. It must weigh 40 pounds.
We are going to volunteer to make one for the show next Spring. I have some neat old parts that would make a nice trophy, I think.
Dan liked his car being in Rod and Kulture so much he bought an extra copy, cut the picture and write up out and made a framed poster out of it. He included his window sheet from the show, some stuff from the goodie bag, and stuff like that. It turned out nice, and I think it took a little of the sting of his engine problems away.

It's much easier to promise someone a "free" ride on the wagon than to urge them to pull it.

Steve, it is essentially the front quarter picture that was shown earlier, one of others in a feature on Billetproof, Florida. There was a nice paragraph written about the car, and the only thing not totally accurate was them saying it was built by Dan and me. Anyone who knows the build realizes Dan put in hundreds , maybe thousands of hours all by himself on this one. I sent an email that I hope they will publish in their readers mail section, clarifying how little I had to do with this car. Dan deserves sole credit for all of it. (Although Don and I were there to kick him in the butt on those occasions he got depressed over it taking so long
).
