Raising the compression is a good idea, do your calcs, be careful with running pump gas and watch piston to valve clearance on higher lift cams.

The 302 block has longer piston skirts than the 289. If you wanna stroke it, the 302 is a better block and the newer ones are set up with the roller cams.
