    Cool 351W build

    Hello All,

    I want to build a 351W I took out of a 1991 Ford Van.
I need advice on what I will need to achive 6,000rpm and 400hp.
Does anyone have a combination they have used?
    Heads,Crank,Intake etc.
This engine is going in a 1934 3 window coupe.
It will have a carb and will be stroked. 383/408 not sure.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks
    Tony

408 is the way to go, I've had a few of them and they do run strong.... Last one I built was an Eagle forged crank, H-beam rods, and Probe pistons....

Welcome to CHR, and also you have a PM....

check out the combos AFR offers for power... some of their work is incredible the amount of power they pull out of mundane builds with some of their nice heads

    Thanks for the reply..........thesals
I went to AFR site. Good info. But nothing about 351W and any stroked engines.

if you call them they can make some good reccomendations as well for a 351 build... the only thing you have to look at is that they're small chambered heads 58 and 61 ccs i believe but you can compensate by using dished pistons and thicker head gaskets.....

i can send you a complete part list in a excel file of a 351w that i put together. i went by three other engine builds that all got 400hp on a dyno. all 3 of those used edelbrock aluminum heads, but i used AFR. i suspect mine is putting out over 410hp. it will scat. if fact, i chewed up the spider gears in the rear end at christmas.

    be prepared to spend 6K.

i recommend building a 393w if you want a stroker motor, as you can use the stock 351w rods(they will handle the power you want), and stock 302 pistons. this combination is inexpensive to build, and makes just about the same power as a 408w(within +-5hp).

getting 400hp from a stock stroke 351w is fairly easy, and adding 42ci will make that even easier. run a set of windsor sr heads(unless you need to reduce weight, then a set of sr lites are good to use), and an extreme energy cam from comp cams. something like the xe274hr grind. with 393ci it will be a mild cam, and give good drivability, as well as decent power(around 450hp or so). just remember to check the valve to piston clearance with that cam.

do balance the rotating assembly, but dont pay for blueprinting as you will never notice the difference.

Curious if anyone has tried the twisted wedge heads on a 393 or 408 Windsor?????

Hello Project 34 in my reading of Mustang books the 302- 351 engines are greatly used in them. They have been doing a ton of articles on low budget solid driver engines. Most pulling HP that was unheard of for the money.

Watch your news stand in Mustang Mags for the articles.

though 400hp is more easily obtained by a stroke 351 than a regular 351. I've seen 400hp 351's many times before. I would just use GT40p with a good port job and 1.94/1.60 valves. use roller cam with 230/236 dur. a good intake with headers and 650cfm carb. 351 is a good way to go if you just want 400hp, if you need more then stroking is your best friend.
