    302 to 289 swap

302 went out in my 79 ford f100 and i have a 289 out of a 65 mustang. it has been rebuilt. so i thought id put it in till i had the money to rebuild my 302.

Every thing went fine till i started tighting it down on the automatic trans(c6 im guessing). after i got it all bolted down i could not turn the engine over with a bar. it turned over fine when it was int the mustang. was wondering if it may have a bit of a diff in the spaceing at the back of the 289 where it bots to the trany and it was pushing on the converter, jamming it?

Iguess what im asking is. will a 65 model 289 work in a 79 f100.
    the mustang had a c4 trans and i think the f100 has a c6.

    Thanks

Which flex plate did you use??? Did the holes on the 289 flexplate line up with the C-6 converter?? Did you remove the torque converter for any reason, and if so, was it all the way into the front pump when you installed the engine????

Well, for some reason it wouldn't work the first time. after i posted i went back out, pulled the motor again and took the fly wheel back off. looked over everything to see if i could tell where it was hitting. didnt see anything so i put it all back together and installed the motor again. now it all works fine. something wasnt right but it seems fine now.

the flywhell and converter im useing on the 289 came off the 302 that came out of the truck. the stuff that came off the 289 was to small to work with my starter.

Im guessing i didnt have the converter lined up right. sometimes it happens if you remove the converters.

Now im going to have to round up all new brackets for my alt and power steering pump. i thought i could use the water pump off the the 302 on the 289 and then use all the brackets that came off but the timeing chain covers are diff. the 302 has a silled plate on the back of it to channel the water and the 289 is open so it uses turned out pieces that channel the water. anyway, all the mounting places for the brackets are a diff lenghts not to mention the pump itself is shorter so ill have to round up new pulleys aswell.

time to head to the junkyard eh? unless anyone exactly what i need

    Thanks all

I'd imagine if the 289 is not a worn out reemed piece of crap that it will run circles around the 302!

yeah, i reccomend just using the whole front of the engine from that 302 on your 289.... timing chain cover and all.... that'll make things a lot easier... seeing that water pump sides and brackets are completely different year to year on fords.... try converting a 6cyl 66 car to a 69 302..... that was interesting trying to find all the right bracketing
just because your car is faster, doesn't mean i cant outdrive you... give me a curvy mountain road and i'll beat you any day
