Ok but do you know what a fair offer would be on the 454 with a 4 bolt main and 30 hours ?

i really do not like to post on a open form what the cost should be for you .as i do this for a living i will not pay what many think a good deal for a core rebuilder .as i need to make money to cover my over head. cost for me has to do with many things year of block all bbc after 1990 are mark 5 and 6 engines many parts will not mix and match to older mark 4 parts .need to look at what parts you can reuse .look on ebay for what something like what you want is sold for and CR list and go from there.i did post saying there are parts that may not make 500hp some heads have very small ports and intake and oil pan may not work so then your buying just a short block. that may or not need machine work so then you have more money in the short block then what i could sell you a 489or 496 bottom end for thats all fresh machined and new parts .you need to write this out on paper
460 No doubt. Thats the engine that comes in my mighty 1971 Lincoln Mark lll. Its makes 375hp from factory and with just some tuning and tweaking I easily made 401hp. Change cam, long tube headers with x pipe, port and polish heads,I also shaved heads, aluminum intake, swap gear to to 4:11,lock rear and you got a Chevy killer and 450hp+. I know cause I've done it.
Same engine I have slincoln 3 and for same reasons! Those old Dove heads, and the 10.5:1 factory compression ratio. Hard to beat, for a stock big block. Now if I was real smart one of those new Coyote 5 ltr. Fords(Dave mentioned earlier in this thread) would be the cats meow! Same horse power, lot less weight and better tuning ability, as well as gas mileage!
you can buy a lot of gas for the 460 for what a coyote would cost to install-------
not really there was alot of stock bbc that and made that and more steam them 450+ stock.the 454slow low hp with a piston change or low hp iron 396 heads and same things done to your 460 put out the same if more power and i know i built both engines fords/chevys. fords have some things working for them as well as the chevy if you under estimate the bbc you just have not ran in to one thats works
Too true Jerry! But then again, this is never a cheap hobby! :) In my case I don't think gas would even figure in since It'll take me a few more years to save pennies to get on the road, and I don't plan on a daily driver! I think this young man just wants to build a big block, and so either choices he's come up with are solid builds.
i tell all the LS engine guys i know how the flat head guys most of felt when the over head valve engines came out olds .caddys and chevys. like any one on here and me he is still going to build what HE wants. i do not wast time talking a customer out of a brand of engine build .just build it the best way i know how
True that. I 've been working on my new project a 1969 LTD with 450hp 390 motor dressed up as 427 Cobra. Car has 69 Mustang hoodscoop and trunk fin,Cobra wheels, floor mats, all Cobra emblems,4:11 gears with posi, shift kit and 2200 stall. I call her the Beast of The East. She is in the shop as we speak getting ready for summer. I'm in Ocean City Md. and welcome all to come see. In time she will have a real 427 and that will be where the Heartbeat of America stops!!!! My brother in law has a 454 SS truck and my nephew has a 454 Monte Carlo both are all souped up. They learned the hard way 1/8 at a time. Yeeha!!!
l hope he did alot the 454 truck engine is a P.O.S . Gm cut the nut off the 454 in the mid 70s that truck in stock form is a joke . but it did make more TQ then the diesel at the time and that was a bigger joke . we had a 454 ss truck not what i would call a barn burner , there is a guy in my town he is older and wiser then when he was young . you roll up to him you better be loaded for bear. he will keep pulling cars out till he tears you a new ass. i just sit back and hand out the bullets nothing under 650hp is going to get the job done less you have it straped in a yugo
Wow I know some dudes like that. I know when to hold em and when to fold em. You ain't going to beat everybody and thats a fact. I learned that the hard way. Thanks
I once raced a kid in high school who had a 454 in a Chevelle, I was driving one of my Dad's italian imports at the time, a 1967 Lancia Fulvia Zagato. It was a very strange little beast but it was super quick off the line. I guess I just got a bug up my ass, but I floored it and shifted like a mad man, when we hit the t intersection, I was in the lead, just as that monster big block was kicking in, fortunately for me I made the turn left, and he slammed on the brakes and went right, but for a short while I was riding high!:)
here is a picture of that strange beast(another car but identical! except color)

alot of 454 were pigs gm did there best to really kill them with all the smog crap. a guy i worked for in the early 80s had a doudle dipped in UGLY. 73 suburban babby poop paint color and was about 800.pounds lighter by the rot up to the door handles and the door skins would flap in the wind back door handles rotted off . he hauled cars with it.he did get in to many stop lite races with it hauling a car sometimes . did not get beat much just did some very minor things to it
