Just went to mount up my alternator today and the casing is too large. I've tried a few different ones from a few different stores but they all seem to have the same issue of the connections on the back of the housing butting up against the engine block. Could anybody point me in the right direction on this one?
I use the small Jap alternators, they are tiny but have large output and weigh nothing, HTH

I put upper mount alt brackets on my 68 Cougar (was lower alt mount with smog pump setup) and the alt is close to the block but fits. But it's a stock size part. I know some larger Powermaster and other alts fit with the lower alt mount brackets. Bad thing is they were used on GT/CJ cars and run $125+ vs $30 for the stock upper alt mount brackets. Any of the brackets bent or replaced possibly? And you have the correct size bolt spacer yes?
No idea on the size of the old one, but it did fit in the upper mount. I last saw it with Jimmy Hoffa so God only knows where it is. I think I'll talk the guys at the parts shop into letting me root around in the back to find one that'll work. If I remember right though the old one only had one wire going to it.
you may have to clock the alternator you remove the pulley and fan remove the 4 screws that hold the front half to the back half separate the 2 halves about an 1/8 in and toy can rotate the back half till the wires don't hit the block there are 4 possible positions ONLY SEPERATE THE 2 HALFS ENOUGH TO TURN THEM IF YOU GO TOO FAR THE ARMATURE WILL SLIDE OUT OF THE BRUSHES AND IT BECOMES A BIG PITA TO PUT BACK TOGETHER:CRY::CRY::CRY:......ted
Well, I've mastered the art of destroying perfectly good alternators. Can't remember either if it was a one wire alternator or if there were two going to it.Quote:
