Measure the bore and stroke...too many deviations on the old casting numbers to accurately say exactly what it is....
the engine is complete and still in a 57 ford fairlane that i bought, thanks
Daryl,
The info I got from a Ford truck site suggests the following:
C=60's era part, 1= 2nd digit of yr part designed(61), A= automobile, (or T= truck), E= engine
That means your engine, or at least the part that has "c1ae" on it, is from a 61 car. Apparently, the only way to tell the difference between a 352 & 390 is to measure the stroke. 352 = 3.50" / 390 = 3.78"
Hope that helps some.....
Nice Job Daryl.
Kurt
You can get a rough measurement of the stroke by removing a spark plug, run that cylinder to TDC and insert a rod or piece of thick wire. Put the wire on the top of the piston and mark it where it aligns with the spark plug hole... Run the cylinder to BDC and insert the rod and mark it again. Remove the rod and measure the distance between your makrks, that will be the stroke.
It's a 390 block.
or put #1 at tdc plug the plug on that one and #4 and measure the distance between the two..
what does date code C17 say?
Actually the C1 indicates the first year that casting was built. If Ford used the same casting molds for years, they all will say C1... on them.
Hello all
I am new to Ford Engines could some one help ?
I am about to buy a 1970 Ford LTD 2Dr.
And concerned about what engine it is.
the car is all there but a few parts are missing from motor
Exh Header. I know the best way is to pull the motor. which i
will do , (After seeing if it will fire and see what kind of noise it makes)
I wanted to know what the 42 meant over 352
And what C6aea i have learned C6= YR 66 ,
but for 390, 410, or 428(wishfull thinking). where are the date codes located
as the engine installed . I see down on a tab by the oil pan . left side or right,
front or back,
I just learned that C6ae-a stamp on the head matches id for Short Rods.
I am going to take a closer look tomorrow at the Engine
before i buy it can i see the date codes while engine is still in car
from underneath.
This will be the first Ford I owned.
I liked the 1970's ford LTD

The 42 over the 352 on the block is simply part of the mold numbering system used by the foundry.
The block date codes are right below the oil filter adaper pad on a small angled edge of the block. If you look at them from underneath the car they will be upside down. It will be a year/month/day format. Ex... 9A16 is 69/Jan/16th. First number is the year ending, the letter is the month A-M Jan-Dec skipping the letter I. Same date code deal on the heads and intake. On the heads most date codes are under the valve cover between the center 2 valve springs. The head casting numbers are mostly between the center 2 sparkplug holes. There's a good chance the engine has been replaced or at least parts of it. Not a big deal long as it's not a pos inside. It can also be 352-360-390 or ? as most FE engines look pretty much the same on the outside. And the same blocks, heads and intakes were used on different displacement engines through the years. So you'd need to inspect the crank, rod, piston assy for acurate stroke. And measure the bore of the block but that requires head removal. I've found that most 352-360's are sometimes 390-428's on sale day. So be aware of what your getting into. Any seller that has nothing to hide will normally disclose the truth and allow inspection or warrenty on his word. And some just don't know really what they have other than what the previous owner said. Looks to the the making of a cool ride. What is he asking for the car?
He is only asking a 1000.00 im shooting for 800.00 . ill going to go get more pics now .
Here are a couple of what i got.
Will send more , thanks for helping out the newbie.
found out the that its C6AE-R , for the heads
and inside 5l22 got a couple of pics
