Apologies if I'm wrong... but where did the "x5 = 312" come from?

I'm putting 9.5 and dividing by 16 and getting 0.59375

OR by following your process 1/16= (62.5 thousandths or 0.062.5) x (9.5) = 0.59375 + 9 = 9.594

The overall length measured was 9 and 9.5/16 (aka 9 and 19/32)

working on an old car may be new to me, but please dont tell me mathematics are failing me too!!! LOL!
