    Brass tag on the block.

I have recently reaquired an Fe motor and trans that I owned, years ago, in a 67' Galaxie. Back in the day, when I purchased the car, I was told the the engine was a 390 and it had been rebuilt and it was .030 over, etc. Today I noticed that there is a brass tag riveted to the front of the block, under the head, on the passenger side. The tag reads RC-26 and then 76094 below that. If anyone has an idea what this tag means, please, let me know. Thanks.

Most likely it's a rebuilder tag. Does it have the Ford logo on it anywhere or just a plain brass tag? The only factory tags I've seen rivited to the side of the block were mostly industrial/irrigation applications. They used a Ford tag with engine CID and specs with a serial number. Being they weren't installed in a car or truck they used a ID tag on them in most cases. Fred Jones (?) was one of the larger Ford rebuilders back then. Also Ford had a rebuild plant in Fairlawn NJ I used to order stuff from back in the 70's. Then there are all the other independant rebuilders that have been around too.

I remember when you could get a long block from Western Auto or "Monkey"
Wards and they would come with a brass tag riveted to the side of the block.
