    ANY ONE KNOW ANY THING ABOUT THE 332 FE MOTOR? CAN I BOLT A 428 UP TO THE SAME BELL HOUSING OR IS THERE A DIFFERENCE IN THE MOTOR MOUNTS ...ETC.? THANKS SCS

    The bell pattern is the same, flywheels too. The main difference in the older FE's is the heads and manifolds, don't matter when you swap engines.

    I think there is a difference in the flywheels,the 428 and 410s are externally balanced and the rest are internally balanced. The 332 flywheel will physically bolt to 428 but there will be a vibration. Jeff

    Forgot about that @#$% Detroit balancing! You'll have to get the 'wheel balanced to the 428 spec.

    Also early 332's used a 153 tooth flywheel and folo-thru starter. Some early engines also did not use a block plate between the block and bell so make a note of that. Later 184 tooth flywheel used the shorter snub nose starter. You can put a later starter gear on a early starter if needed. You can also use a later style starter on the older bells. Depending on the clutch and pressure plate you choose you might get some interference on the pressure plate. Later bells have a hump cast into them for that very reason. I'm sure there are a few other things I'm forgetting also.....

    Over the years, I have run into a few glitches when swapping FE motors.
    1) Mounts. When I put a '62 Galaxie 352 motor into my '66 Galaxie (originally had a 390), the motor mounts did not match up. If I remember right, one set of mounts was 'C' shaped and the others were flat.
    2) A clearance problem. With a '65 390/ '63 Cruise-a-Matic combo. I had my transmission rebuilt and they installed a rebuilt torque converter which took out the engine's thrust bearing. I didn't have that problem before the rebuild. I found out that the converters come in two thicknesses.
    3) Starter hang up on the above combo. Currently, my starter is hanging up. Nobody could tell me why, but I bet it's what FFR428 said in his post. I probably have the early starter, but need the snub nose. I'll pull the starter and take a look at it.

    I would like to install a C6, I will post that question in another thread.

    This forum has been so helpful to me, it's the only source where I have been able to find so many who are knowledgeable about the FE.

    Now that you mention it, I do remember the mounts changed sometime between 1964 and 1967.
    Also there are several different exhaust manifold bolt patterns.

    I BOUGHT A 64 GALAXIE 500 THAT HAD A 390 AND CUISEAMATIC TRANNY IN IT. I PLAN TO PUT A 390 BLOCK THAT I BORED TO A 4.13 AND ALL 428 CRANK FLYWHEEL AND DUAL 4'S WITH A 4 SPEED TOP LOADER. JUST A FEW MORE PARTS TO GO AND QUITE A FEW MORE DOLLARS. THANKS AGAIN FOR ALL YOUR HELP. SCS

    I'm in the process of getting my Tri-power 401 FE (stroker 352) and C6 set in my 64 Custom (picture a stripped 64 Galaxie 2dr Post). Should have it bolted down tomorrow.

    califgrrrl is correct about there being a difference in motor mounts. The PRIMARY difference was the latter blocks used 3 mounting bosses and the earlier blocks (such as in your 64s original engine) only used 2. Not sure, but I believe the 2 bolt mounts like you will need for your car will bolt to a latter block with little or no mods.

    If your running the 390 heads, Ford made both short and long cast iron headers that fit the 64s. A bit heavy but they really look good on them, and they go on E Bay for about the same cost as a set of coated aftermarket headers.
