wter pump backing plate and timing cover

does it help much to smooth out the timing cover in and outlets,"new cover" and match the backingplate to the waterpump. or is this over kill. its a stock motor in a box truck. im worried that the cheap stamped metatl backing plate that looks to be nickel plated will rust if i start grinding it.

No, just bolt it on as is. If there were any benefits at all they would be negligible.
