    429 info

bought a 1965 f-100 with a 429 in it, previous owner did not know much about the engine, said it was a 1975 year model, intake has d6ve-9425-a3a and heads have d3ve-a2a, it has a holly 4150 carb, i cannot find the number for the engine, i looked at the back side where can that be found, looking to put alum intake, headers, and eventually a mild cam, anyone have suggestions or more info about this engine ?,, seen a good few tips allready,

    D6VE is a 1976 intake. D3VE heads are 1973 (or newer).
429's and 460's seemed to have really mild stock cams. Any aftermarket cam is an improvement.

Not sure, but I believe that is one of the years that had the retarded chain and gears on it. A new cam and timing set would do wonders for it....

Ford 429's were not produced in 1975 and I believe 1973 was the last year. Hopefully it's a 1975 460.

If it is a 460, then the pre-72 straight up timing chain is the way to go (available in aftermarket). If it is a 1973 429, then not only is the chain a good way to go but so is a pair of D0VE heads...OR a piston change. The compression ratio of the 1973 429 is dismal, like 7.6:1. Flat top pistons or D0VE heads will bring the c/r somewhat closer to 9:1.

A good mild cam that will work with a bone stock 429/460 might be the Summit grind SUM-3501...but again if you ahve the 7.6:1 c/r motor, you must address the c/r issue first.

Posted by Paul Kane on another forum...
"The block casting number is located on the side of the block, down low, behind the starter motor and reads vertically."

Find out what you have first, then address timing and such.

my neighbor was a car salesman at a dealership in the early 70s, they had a mustang boss 429 that sat on the lot for two years, he tried and tried to sell the car, still brand new mind you, and finally did for $2000.... the 429 was never the best motor out there, the 460s were a better setup........

    429 vs 460

I'll keep it simple,, what is better about a 460 than a 429? Except for a longer
cast iron crank. If your friend could not sell a Boss 429 it's because nobody
    knew what it was!

the 429s, especially the california equipment cars, were very choked motors, and didn't perform well at all, especially as for the cost compared to other motors offered the same years.... the only 429s i've personally come across are california smog equipped motors.... i'm sure with enough money dumped into them the 429s can be a great motor, as can any motor be great depending on how much money you put in it
