When your brother isn't looking pull the coil wire out of the distributor. Ask him to plug it back in. when he grabs it crank the engine. if he gets a shock and calls you a f%#@& you know the coil is working. Hope this helps. it always works for me.

Butt seriously. How long has it been since it last ran? Do you have spark? Is it getting gas?

More than likely the points condensor is bad, they tend to go bad from sitting, this will cause no spark, go to your local auto parts store like napa and get a new 1, just tell them what engine you got and, they will probably have to order 1 but they only cost 10 - 20 bucks. just touch up the old points with a file if they look corroded or burnt, if you need new, there like 15 bucks depending on engine ( the spare set of points I bought for the Falcon cost me 12 bucks, the set of points I bought for the Chevy to make it run, cost me 15, the main thing that was bad with the chevy was the condensor but I replaced the points also ), with fuel, it should fire up.

No spark from the coil wire narrows it down to a bad coil or the points aren't gapped right. Or it could be that the starter is draining all the amps when it cranks.

you need to know what the voltage is at the points. you don't wont 12 at the points. the coil may have a resister built in or you need to add one if it don't. 12 volts will cook the points you wont about 7 volts.

id like to help you get it started, but you need to know a few things. you need to know how much voltage you have at the points 12v will burn them up. can you get a volt meter and check that?

a 12 volt system has around 6-7 volts at the points but that 6 volt system couldnt have had over 6 volts but thats all you need. if you have put 12 volts to it for any time you may have burnt them up. let me know.
