    Cool Distributor advance, how much?

    Hi, I am new here, so be kind. I am trying to figure out how to set up my distributor. I have a 79 Camaro, with a 400ci small block. 9 to 1 compression, L79 cam (224 at.05 and .447 lift ). Dart II heads, (200cc runners) Dart II dual plan intake with Holley Avenger 770cfm carb. 2400 rpm stall converter in the TCI turbo 350 auto trans. 12 bolt posi rear with 3.73 gears. MSD6 ignition hooked up to the HEI distributor. The distributor currently has 20 degrees (at the crankshaft) built in, all in by 3000 rpm. Do I need more in the distributor? I am starting at 14 degrees initial advance. I have an adjustable vacuum advance, Where should I set it? Thanks.

    Hey Tappeter;
    Sounds to me like you got a good handle on the matter already. A 400 doesn't like a whole lot more than 34 degrees, otherwise it takes out the main bearings. As for vacuum advance, the problem with it is that it might take you over the top. In other words, if you have your timing set at 34 degrees total at 3000 rpm, if by chance the manifild vacuum keeps 2 or more degrees, there goes your bearings.

    I suggest all rodders who use high lift cams to eliminate vacuum advance totally, reduce the advance in the distributor to 14 or there abouts,... and set the total to 35 max. Good luck!
    Objects in my rear view mirror are a good thing unless,.... they have red and blue lights flashing.
