Sounds to me like you got a good handle on the matter already. A 400 doesn't like a whole lot more than 34 degrees, otherwise it takes out the main bearings. As for vacuum advance, the problem with it is that it might take you over the top. In other words, if you have your timing set at 34 degrees total at 3000 rpm, if by chance the manifild vacuum keeps 2 or more degrees, there goes your bearings.
I suggest all rodders who use high lift cams to eliminate vacuum advance totally, reduce the advance in the distributor to 14 or there abouts,... and set the total to 35 max. Good luck!Objects in my rear view mirror are a good thing unless,.... they have red and blue lights flashing.
