I have a 700 something cfm edelbrock (#1407) on a 460 and its running a little rich at idle and slow speeds, since I know nothing about tuning them and more familar with holleys what would a good size for the 460 or is the edelbrock easy to tune. Jeff

The Edelbrock is easy to tune. On the Edelbrock site, they have a troubleshooting section and a chart that will show you where you should be on the springs.... Easy stuff, Jeff.Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

that CFM is a good match for your engine. Good luck..
Education is expensive. Keep that in mind, and you'll never be terribly upset when a project goes awry.

same question
Can I hijack this thread? Its actually the same question with specific details.
I am building two 78 broncos, i found them recently, they had made their way from west texas and had zero rust, not even any holes on the bottom side. Anyway, bronco #1 will have original 400M everything stock with a brand new two bbl and edlebrock 0-4500rpm intake/ cam is 1500 to 5500rpm. iam ok with this setup, I think it will turn out as i plan. Bronco #2 will have my 3/4 ton 460 rebuilt stock, THE question is, will the new 650 cfm Holey be big enough for a pretty much stock 460.
Ohh my twin 14 year old daughters have laid claim to these, we'll see...........

Since the OEM Autocraft on my long gone '79 F350 was, I believe, about 500CFM, a 700 on a stock 460 is too much. The Edelbrock 1406 is a 600CFM and was a good replacement on that particular truck. (I did try a Holley 3310, 780 CFM and it shoved gas through that engine about like a flush toilet, especially driving through the Rocky Mountains - thank goodness for THREE gas tanks and 55 gallons

I did probably the first 460 install in a pickup in 1970----we used this truck to pull our 30 foot enclosed trailer with our front engine dragster along with etra engine, tools, extra tires'wheels, etc----we ended up running an 850 holley on it as with the smaller carbs we were constantly getting into the seconaries a little on the fuel econ would go to hell---with the 850 we had much larger primaries and could get a lot more pull before we'd start tripping the seconaries---We also had an 800 on one truck but the 850 worked better--
Several Ford people saw the install and they finally came out with the 460 as an option in 1973. I just recently did an POrshe engine for another shop and one of there guys ( former Ford eng) asked me what ever happened to the devil truck??? I guess it had a repetation that I wasn't aware of---

I am going to talk with a local carb shop monday and see if they have the parts to lean out the edelbrock some,I am more familair with holleys and can tune them but I have never had a edelbrock apart. Since it seems to be loading up on idle I need to see if the needle valve is shutting off and not dumping down the carb,I have a 750 holley on a 390 ford and it did not load up on idle but I had to jet it down 3 sizes to get it run the best and get decent mileage. See techinspector's comment above, re: web site with a pdf of the tuning manual. The Edelbrocks are a snap to tune and modify. Most metering rod and jet changes can be accomplished in a matter of minutes. The tuning manual has a graph showing conditions and giving the part numbers to change rods and jets.
One word of advice - buy a new gasket for the top of the carb in the event you have to change the jets.
Good Luck,
Glenn

Im a Holley and QJ fan myself and not too fond of the Edelbrock/carter AFB style of Carbs at all...with that being said I do have to admit that they are by far easier to tune and work on that any other carb I have worked with in my opinion.

Its actually doing good right now, when the motor was in the donor truck it did not have a full exhaust and seemed to be running rich but now its in a truck with a full dual exhaust and it runs fine. It was actually running too lean but I think it was in the fuel filter and the fuel pressure is 4 3/4 so all I have to do now is drive it for awhile and read the plugs. Jeff
