    smokin!

     



    got problems... i have a 283 chevy in a 50 chevy p/u.. and well.. this is the first occourrence of this.. always running fine untill yesterday when i started it up and it almost sounded like it had a slight miss.. even when you drive it, it still feels like it has a miss... after driving it 90 miles, i pulled the plugs and the number 1 plug was wet and oily looking. still having a bit to drive.. i put them back in and drove.. every time i came to a stop light, the left side exhaust had smoke coming out of it ( hence the no. 1 plug ) i just figured if fouled out so i went and got me some new plugs, put the no. 1 plug in new and fired it up and still no change??!!! can you help me? hah also the performance loss really doesnt seem like its short a cylinder, it is noticeable that it is a little slower than it used to, but i just dont know what happened.. any help would be awsome!!! rod run tonight too!!!!!!

    Something has happened to that cylinder from the sounds of it. Oil can only get sucked into the combustion process one of several ways. You might have a cracked or stuck ring(s), or a valve seal might have gone away.

    Some of our sharp engine guys will have more to offer, and probably some diagnostic things you can do, like a leak down test, etc.

    yeahh i just pulled the no. 1 again.. and its just wet... it doesnt look oily.. and when it was smokin, it didnt really smell like oil... and when i was just cruising, it wasnt smoking.. .just when i was sitting there.. then it would die

    After you do what Denny suggested you might want to check the condition of your plug wires. You might not be getting full spark to #1.

    i dont have access to a comp tester... .where do i go for this?

    From past experience with 283's, I'd say #1 piston is cracked.

    CRACKED?!?!?!?! holy crap.. haha well i just drove it to my storage unit to park... and i had a friend follow me and he said the only time it smoked was when i stopped for more than a minute... aaaaaahhh im just kinda b/s'n here just cuz i cant afford ANYTHING.. haha so i guess im just trying to find the little "cheap" possible fixes... the 283 has about 6000-7000 miles on it , vortech heads, lunati voodoo cam, edelbrock intake, holley carb, tci 700r4 tranny, and 4.10's in the back... the original build of the engine was about 5-6 years ago and then it just turned into the weekend cruizer when i got it put in the truck. i doubt a cracked piston would be it??? with 7000 miles? OH GOOOD.. the agony.. well poo.. i guess.. ill slowly collect on them tools and you guys help me through all the steps n such.. i appreciate it guys really... just now bummed i couldnt make a good appearance on americruize this year!!

    The guys pretty much covered it. Start simple either with a compession check or pull the valve cover and take a peek at the valve seals. With the intake and exhaust closed you should be able to take a light and see if the seals are still in place. While your there you might also check the drain back holes in the lower corners of the head and make sure their open.

    Replacing valve seals in car is pretty cheap and simple and the folks here can walk you through it.

    Don't panic until you figure out what's wrong.
    I've NEVER seen a car come from the factory that couldn't be improved.....
