    cam advancing questions

i was no a 500 caddy forum and read some threads on camshaft and radicaly advancing a factory 500 daddy camshaft .

i am trying to get my pea around what one is trying to do when one advances a camshaft i kind if understand the idea as a lot of cams are retarded up to 6 degrees and more and it brings the combustion events more in order.
the caddy cam specs if advanced dont look too bad compared to some of the smaller afermarket grinds.

Advancing the cam gives more bottom end, I can't imagine a 500 Cad
needing more bottom end though. It also takes away from the top end.
Be sure to check valve to piston clearence each time you make a change.
It would depend alot on the weight of the vehicle.

Advancing /retarding the cam moves the power band up or down ,it can make more power or less depending on how close the intake valve closing point was to optimum.Changes the dynamic compression a little too.
Its gunna take longer than u thought and its gunna cost more too(plan ahead!)

shawn would you mind telling me what dynamic compression is? i have never heard that term before and this kinda caught mu interest because i advanced the cam timing in my galaxie after reating that it gave more low end power. what kind of changes would advancing make as far as dynamic compression?

Basically the cam controlls when the intake valve closes and therefore the actuall pressure that will be built in the cylinder. If you close the intake valve right before top dead center you loose compression and if you close the intake at bottom dead center you increase the amount of compression.
