Dialing in a holley 2 bbl

I bought a used holley 500 CFM 2 bbl to put on a 302 in my 65 galaxie, the carb is probably too big and when I put it on it dumped way too much fuel and was not a stuck float so I put the motorcraft carb back on and took the holley apart. The holley carb has 73 jets and the original motorcraft 2 bbl has 48 jets, does the holley require that big of jets or should I put in the size of the original carb to start the dialing in process. When you say dumped too much fuel, was there too much fuel at idle or while you stepped on the gas under load? If it's dumping too much fuel at idle you may just need to adjust the idle needles. On the other hand make sure the power valve isn't blown.
I wouldn't go with 48's in the holley, that's too small, you might want to start with 65's and go from there.

It was dumping too much that it would not idle and it was much more then any idle mixture adjustment would fix,I got some 57 and bigger jets and will put in a new power valve as it was wet on the vacumn side of the metering body. Jeff
