Rough Running
Hello! Newbie here! I have a 1985 Chevy 305/700R4 installed in an S10. It is a stock motor w/ the exception of Edel #1406 Carb, #2101 Performer Intake, Edel Valve Covers & Air Cleaner. To get it to run w/ no Detonation... I've had to retard the timing WAY back! Everyone I've talked to talks about ESC in the distributor! I've only got 3 wires in the connector & ESC shows to have 4 wires. Is this an ESC HEI Distributor?
This really has me confused. I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed but... I had the Identical set up in a truck that was stolen & it ran wonderful! This motor is driving me nuts!
Any suggestions???
Thanks

How do I go about checking the Mech Advance? How will I know if it is stuck in the open position?
Thanks for your help!

the adv. is under the rotor button. take the cap and rotor off of the dist and make sure everything on top of the dist is clean and loose, so it will move.Originally posted by edelbrock305

Ok! I have the Dist Cap & Rotor off as I type....Everything seems to be moving just fine. No binding but... I notice that there is some oil in the bottom of the Dist Housing. This isn't normal is it? I have never seen oil in the housing when changing Rotors or Caps. This seemed to be very odd to me!
Now what?
Thanks LT1 as always!

no you shouldn't have oil in the dist. i heard of it, but never seen it. unless someone know something that i don't id say you need another dist. a little oil wont hurt anything, but it will get worse,Originally posted by edelbrock305

I've never actually seen this either! I think you are right... It may be time for another Dist. My only question is... Will the small amount of oil interfere w/ Timing at all? My gut feeling is "Yes" but I'm not very Knowledgeable w/ Dist or Timing at all. I know the basics & that is about it!
Thanks,

i dont think a little oil will keep you from setting the time . take some carb. cleaner and clean the dist out and blow it out good with air and try to set the time again( while its clean). it should take awhile for the oil to get back into the dist.Originally posted by edelbrock305
