The old story is that you "need" a vacuum advance for street driving. However it is supposed to aid in fuel economy which is not high on my list of concerns. :-) My engine (see post around here somewhere) ramps way up on the advance - much more the savage beast without it. I normally stop using a vacuum advance around the .280 mark on a small block because fuel mileage is no longer a concern.
