The number one post on the distributor is wherever the rotor points when you do what HWORREL suggested two posts up.

Get to #1 TDC, set the distributor in place, rotate it so that it points to the closest post on the distributor, and call that #1. Then replace all of your spark plug wires going around the distributor clockwise using the Chevy firing order of 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2.

1, 3, 5, 7 cylinders are on the driver's side.
2, 4, 6, 8 cylinders are on the passenger side.
