    Rod bearing wear

I developed a knock in my 454 so I pulled the pan and pulled one random cap, number 5. The insert looks almost new on the inside of the insert. But the back of it is polished and oil stained. I pulled another cap and it's the same way. What is going on? Did the engine assembler fit it up too tight?

Jerry, it seems to me that it would help if you could add just a little more to help a guy understand your line of thought. Are you suggesting that he hasn't found the one making noise yet, and needs to pull all of the caps to be sure, or is there something else that you're looking for?

Time to examine everything in the engine..... IMO either something wasn't machined right, assembled right, or the oiling system is FUBAR. Just looking at a couple random bearings won't answer the question, best look at the mains and cam bearings, too!

Thanks Jerry and Dave. This engine is in a 29 5 window coupe that I bought in Jan. The first thing I did to it was pull the cam gear drive out of it and I replaced it with a 2 row chain drive. It ran just fine until recently when the when the knock occured. I was just bewildered when I pulled those 2 rod caps because I've never seen anything like this in any engine. I'm 62 and thought I'd seen it all. Being disabled I was hoping I wouldn't have to pull the whole engine apart.
I'll pull the rest of the rod caps tomorrow and see if they are all alike, then start pulling the main caps. Thanks again

number one main if any rod bearing are going south number one will show trash on it if its nocking what many time sound like rod to some is a busted flex plate loose fly wheel bolts converter bolts.if looking at the rods you will see them turn black to blue if spun .be alot of grit i oil filter . looking at the rod were the bearing sets in the housing bore. you should see in print of the back of bearing shell in the rod housing you want see all cross hatch if you do not .then it could be finished the big of rod has no crush on the bearing. if they started to spin there should see fretting in the rod bore .then what comes next is the bearing shell welding it.s self to rod bore . if you can get a photo on here of rod big end were bearing sets in th housing bore of rod. the backing side of one of the rod bearings
