FWD stuff will usually have the motor transverse mounted. If that blows your skirt up, look at a Ford Taurus with the Yamaha aluminum V6 SHO and a 5-speed. IIRC, they were in the range of about 240 hp. Should work really well in a super light car. Just buy a whole Taurus SHO and use everything out of it, including the wiring and EFI. When you're done building your ride, sell the sheetmetal and glass to help defray costs.

If you're thinkin' more power than that, talk to these guys about mating up a 5-speed transaxle with a 383 SBC. Heck, even a 9.5:1 350 on pump gas would be a lot of fun.
