SS 454 p/u truck need engine suggestions
My boss' SS 454 with 101K mile is about to let go ..... lower end rattle. Oh ... it's in the bottom end - NO DOUBT.
He's recently changed out TBI to carb/intake/HEI/MSD ...... and it ran VERY WELL I might add.
So he's a hard driver & the other day he asked me to come out to hear the sound the engine is making. I know right off but didn't want to be the bearer of the bad news.
I tell him let a "professional" check it out. They come up with the same thoughts I had - bottom end a bit loose & making a rapping sound. No not that kinda rap.
I'm now looking for a crate engine .....any suggestions(54HO, 502, 572)/vendors?
Help me direct him.
Thanks.

Don't know, Regs.... Guess I'd be for getting the old one out and see how bad things are first.... If it's the bearings or pistons, a bit of machine work, stroker kit, and a good set of aftermarket heads he could have the original engine with some updated power...
Otherwise, the 502 or 572 inch GM crate motors wouldn't be bad, seen a few of them installed and they make a good runner.....Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

Thanks Dave,
He's a bit impatient ....... not really worried about the originality. I was just trying to gather info for him but have no info on the 502 or 572.
I've run many BBC's so I'm a fan.

Should be able to find everything you need in the GM crate motors listing....Prices, specs, etc.... just do the google thing for "GM 572 crate motor" and start looking at the responses....Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

You're welcome. I've never bought anything that large from Summit, but they do have good customer service and a good return policy.Ken Thomas

Welcome to CHR. I think that you need to hook up your vacuum advance. At part throttle when cruising you have less air and fuel in each cylinder, and the air-fuel mixture is not as densely packed...
