Quick and dirty. if it has a two piece rear seal it's a Mark IV. If it has a one piece rear seal it's a Gen V-Gen IV.

The Gen V's came on board in 1992 (there may be some late 1991 date codes).

    Happy hunting!

i can tell them apart by the timming cover the mark 6 has a cast cover the mark 5 has a tin cover like a mark 4 . some of the mark 6 do not have fuel pump boss the mark 5/6 blocks are more square .looking by the oil filter there is not a set in like older mark 4 so they have no iron lip around the fiter.the mark 5/6 have one pic seal cranks and pans the photo by my name is a mark 6 that i turned over to a take mark 4 tin oil pan and timing cover by drilling and tapping the added holes this was partly done for the use of mark 4 steel billet caps and using one upper seal adapter i machine to work on the block and going to a two pic seal 4.250 crank and the front timming cover was just a better way to go the older mark timming set inside the engine the mark 5 still used hyd flat lifters were mark 6 used roller lifters. there other things to them are the EZ ways to check with no numbers i work on alot of them so i can tell from about 10 feet away
