    Fuel pump modification

I have 2 extra fuel pumps for the 196 6cyl in my Rambler, they do need rebuilt.. I would like to have a vac fuel pump for my 235 Chevy. I was comparing 1 of the AMC 196 pumps to the old pump I pulled off the 235 a few years ago, and found the bolt pattern and pump arm pin location and size are the same.. the pump arm is deffinetly diffrent, but being the pin size is the same, I could swap them easilly.. the only diffrence I can see is the spring is longer and smaller in diamater on the 235 pump... if I can get the actuation force and pump throw length relitivly the same, would it be safe to do this conversion?

i wouldn't see why not...... but at the same time.... a pump for your 235 is $25 that's like almost 6 gallons of gas..... which who knows your custom assembled pump might only last 6 gallons of gas because of the age of the diaphram..... diaphram failure would cause gas to leak into your oil and possibly cause severe damage to the engine which you might not even notice until its too late....

235 pump w/o vac pump is $25. add the vac pump and it goes up to around $100.

I would rebuild the pump b4 installing it of course.

Can you buy fuel pump rebuild parts nowadays?

Seems like parts houses dropped those long ago.

your right, the parts houses do not carry rebuild kits anymore, but the AMC parts houses and places like This can furnish the kits, or a rebuild service... Kits for the 235 pumps are also available from most restoration parts houses for them.. both the vac and non vac versions
