    Inline 6 I.D.

I'm trying to figure out which engines I got with my '51 Chev pick-up. I found the serial numbers just behind the distibuter on both but I can't find anywhere on the internet to i.d. these. Any help would be great. I also have a SBC I'm just waiting on the phone call with the numbers so if there is a good site to check these myself please let me know.

First one in the truck is: 425268
    Second spare engine is: x486534
    both inline six.

    Thanks,
    Sean

get a picture and I can tell you. gonna say probably 216's... I don't think those are the correct numbers, altho that is the correct location to find them... I can't find them here but should be able to...

BTW.. 216/babbit pounder 235, valve cover is held on by 2 acorn nuts on the top... Full preassure oiling 235 or a rare 261, valve cover is bolted around the perimiter of the cover. easy way to tell them apart

216/ babbit pounder 235, not worth rebuilding except for a resto ( cost $3,000 to do it correctly IF you can find someone to pour the bearings )

235/ 261's are totally worth building, solid engine, parts are available and plenty of them to go around.

I went and double checked the numbers and that's what they were????

The x486534 even matches the number on the inside door tag. Here's some pictures:

both engines are 216 babbit pounders. pretty sure the spare is also a truck engine judging by the length of the road draft tube. car draft tubes are shorter I belive ( my '51 car draft tube is I know ) but that's just a guess.

    Thanks Matt, that was hard!!

    So I guess the 350 or 383 with the t350 or 400 isn't a bad idea then.

The engine in the back is a 235, can't see the side of the one under the hood well enough to tell. The 216 has a high side cover, it goes right up to the valve
cover and the plugs go through it.
The dipper engines have a three bolt plate on the manifold side, just above the pan rail. it's about three inches long, two inches high. The pressure lubed engines don't have this plate at all.

BTW Matt, the valve covers changed in '55, the 235 pressure engines built before then had the 2 bolt holes.

Looks like the truck is in really great shape!!! Think you'd be a lot happier with some V-8 power.... Leave the 6 poppers for the collector dudes....

That's the idea . I might steal the 383 SBC with the AFR heads away from my '27 T and put it in the truck. Being the heavier of the two it only makes sense to give it the bigger engine with the T400............right. Then I can find a running engine for my T and get it on the road sooner. I'm convinced!!

I've been thinking of power disc brakes, power steering, and of course lowering it as well. More research.

Sounds like a plan to me!!!! I've done a few chasssis' for that vintage truck, they need boxing plates and some improved crossmembers but when done correctly they are a very nice handling and riding truck!!!!!

Oh ok, that's good to know... guess I didn't know 1/2 of what I needed to know in order to correctly ID the 216-261 engines.

I guess now I don't need to worry about looking off if I ever put a full preassure 235 in my car.. purist's will be able to tell, but I'm probably going to drop $500 or so on a Wayne valve cover/ side cover, and fenton headders and intake ( the Offy isn't the only reproduced option now ) all in all, the motor won't be stock anyway.

how about the 235 from the truck bed.. pull it apart, clean it up, use new bearings and rings, mate it to a powerglide or use an adaptor and run a T350.. they sound pretty sick with headders.
won't take much to move the light model T.. they are 685# but, I bet the 6cyl will draw more attention if it's done up nice.. tubular headders are only $149 for the 216-235. $200 for the intake if you go Fenton, the Offy is more expensive. they are a bit on the long side, so you could have clearence issues
