This actually answered my question I had that I was going to post. My block has a pipe plug as well(1966 396). But why the pipe plug? Did they not have oil pressure gauges originally?

some blocks did have one spot that was tap out to 1/8 pipe about one 2 inch ahead of the 1/2to 3/8 pip plug but not all blocks have this tap out so the one above the oil filter works
