    desk top dynos

    Hello
Has anyone used programs like desk top dyno, virtual engine calculators, etc.
How do you rate them? Are they a crock, do they work , do they get you in the horsepower range predicted? Do they steer you low/high of your predicted rating ? Look forward to hearing your opinions!

to me they seem a little high, but i have never compared their data to an actual true physical dyno to give a scientific answer to your question. they are a good source to have on hand anytime you want it, i would guess they are fairly accurate. they are pretty interesting just to mess around with for an afternoon. now do not laugh but this is true, I have desktop dyno 2000 and got a PS2 IHRA drag racing 1 video game, it runs the identical dyno on the game in the builder profile. i built the car to my actual super comp dragsters specs and it ran within a tenth of my actual real life dial in time on the game, hey i said not to laugh. i also did the same with my dads old gasser willys and got the same results.

IMO they are a good way to see what changes do to the virtual numbers, much more so then a dead-on accurate way of rating an engine's horsepower... We've compared them to actual dyno results, sometimes they're high, sometimes low. The better programs that include more of the variables are of course far more accurate then some of the old ones. But when just doing the "I wonder what would happen if" scenario's on an engine that you already have a baseline on with a virtual dyno I think they do accurately portray whether what you're considering is an increase or decrease in power, and where you can expect it to show up in the rpm range....
