Check engine light question, 90 suburban

    Hey everybody,

I have a 1990 GMC suburban, with Throttle Body Injection, 5.7 liter engine, 2wd, 190,000 miles, needs to be smogged regularly

my question is what does the check engine light monitor??, the light doesnt come on right away, maybe 5 or 10 minutes after i start driving it, then on a long run it will turn off, then sitting at a light it will come back on, then turn off....turn on....rrrrrr

My assumption is that it doesnt monitor the o2 or egr sensor because i changed those last year and the light never came on, and ended up with better gas milage because the o2 sensor was bad........so what does that "check engine" light monitor???

thanks in advance for the reply's, i wont be able to check back on the thread until later today
If it aint broke, fix it till it is.

Take it to Autozone and let them scan it. It may have a trouble code in it telling you of another problem, like an idle speed error, or something.

The guys at the auto-zone (or checker's or wherever) can decipher the trouble codes for you... no need to become an obd1 expert.

never intended to become an obd1 expert from the owners manuel ........ just need to know where to plug the scanner into.......since i was just made aware that you can even scan a 90 suburban......just incase the kid at autozone has no clue

most stores only do obd2.... obd1 is too complicated for parts counter boys .... on your vehicle though the owners manual should have a way to check trouble codes with no plugin what so ever, you just do what it says and it will blink the check engine light to give you the code
just because your car is faster, doesn't mean i cant outdrive you... give me a curvy mountain road and i'll beat you any day
