    poncho 307 questions

hi...just been given a poncho 307cui motor and turbo 350 for my track T...
Been reading up on these motors on the various websites and i'm kinda getting conflicting reports about these engines..
I'm not looking to win any land speed records, just something low buck and yet still torquey and reliable for my T, but alot of sites i've visited say these things suck...

is it worth cam'ing the 307?? i've seen a couple over at summit for reasonable $$$

    your thoughts please

    1. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.
    2. Run it with the cam that's in it 'til it lays down on you.

I certainly wouldnt do #1, i needed a mototr and this came along for free, so i'm pretty happy, was just wondering why soo many people think these suck...
The spec of the motor is about what i wanted for the T, something with grunt but nothing too excessive..

I stripped the block down yesterday and the cam is showing a lil wear..it'll probably go again, but i figured i'd rather freshen anything that is suspect..

    thanks

I like Richard's idea there. If it ain't broke don't fix it. One exception to this could be (I did say could be), This is a chevy small block and that 307 had some potential for torque and a guy could easily and cheaply play with it to make it smooth, bark the tires, and still afford the fuel to it. Why don't you double check and see if it's Chevy.
What if the "Hokey Pokey" is what it's really all about?

the 307 isn't a bad little engine every just automatically screams for people running smaller displacement chevy's even though theres nothin wrong with it.... sure the 350 is a great motor blah blah blah.... i personally am sick of hearing about your 350

so go ahead and build the 307 a little bit, i'd clean her up a bit see what she needs, if cylinders and rings look fine leave the bottom end alone, cam looks a little worn you say? then replace it with a little bigger cam that has good torque, use some rhoads lifters, roller rockers are optional but not neccisary....other than that, throw it in your T and enjoy it
just because your car is faster, doesn't mean i cant outdrive you... give me a curvy mountain road and i'll beat you any day
