Yes, there is another way. When the timing mark on the balancer is at the TDC groove at Zero, you have one of two pistons at TDC on the compression stroke. Either it is #1 or #6.
With the valve covers off, the piston which is on the compression stroke will have both rockers doing nothing for a large part of a cycle of the engine whereas the piston which is on the exhaust/intake stroke will have both rockers on the move. Rotate the motor so that #1 piston’s valves/rockers are in the closed position and at TDC, drop your distributor into position, take note of where the rotor is pointing, and place your number one wire on the distributor close to that location. Then install the balance of the wires.
If you do not like where your rotor is pointing, you will have to rotate the oil pump drive to suit.Objects in my rear view mirror are a good thing unless,.... they have red and blue lights flashing.
