    I know this is an old post and everything was worked out but, I would be willing to bet that the fuel line was connected where the line from the breather should go and vice versa. One of my friends just did this and there was no fuel from the jets and was just dumping fuel from the carb base directly into the intake.
    That would explain the gentlemen's problem and the gas in places it shouldn't be...
