The distributor seals the passage to the lh (drivers side) side of the block. Without the distributor in place you're only going to get oil down one side of the engine.http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/647081

another trick is if you have a crapped up old distributor lying around, you just tear off the cam gear, and then hook your drill up to the rotor fitting....
