Harmonic balancer torque
How tight do u get the harmonic balancer ?And do u snug it all the way down?Heres my prob goto turn the engine over by hand and the nut on the crank snout turns and pulls the balancer and pulleys outa line with the water pump pully.Like its not torqued down. This is a sb chevy.Last edited by shawnlee28; 01-30-2005 at 08:10 PM.

I have been all over the internet and have read from 45 ftlbs to 160 ftlbs .So if I need to torque it down and it moves the pulley outa alignment with the water pump what is the solution? Its gunna take longer than u thought and its gunna cost more too(plan ahead!)

Thnx tech thats the best article I have seen so far(been lookin on the net fer a few hours)!!!Its a 86 305 chevy Denny. This prob was found from my other post tryin to turn the engine over to check compression. This is an older v pully attached to the harmonic balancer with 3 bolts could I space the pully with these bolts and some washers, the center bolt is what holds the balancer and the 3 other bolts hold the pully to the balancer?I will torque the balancer to 70 ftlbs and see how bad the alignment is. thnx guysIts gunna take longer than u thought and its gunna cost more too(plan ahead!)

Thnx all, got it closer now took the torque wrench and tightened the balancer bolt to 70 ftlbs and changed the water pump pully to 1 I thought looked the same but it lined up closer ,now its off by maybe a 1/16 or less!! I will try it like this if I get belt wear problems or it jumps off the pulley I will get some paper thin washers.Thnx for all the help!! ............. The story on the engine is that some kid got a long block built and balanced ..(but) he put on the water pump, intake, valve covers and oil pan and so on and so on.Basically I have disasembled the thing back to a long block...............So while I am at this stage I will check torque on the heads, crank and all the bolts I can reach and see,is this a good idea? Its gunna take longer than u thought and its gunna cost more too(plan ahead!)

Based on what you've said so for, you'd better check everything.Jack

Keep in mind that on Chevys, there are "long" water pumps, and "short" water pumps. The pulleys on the water pump and the crankshaft have to be from/for the same setup. I don't know what the exact difference in the length is, but it seems to me that it is not but about 1/2 to 1 inch.

Just checked it all out ,the torque was correct on all the fasteners for the long block, just the stuff the kid bolted on with incorect fasteners and no lock washers and no torque wrench.thnx all!Its gunna take longer than u thought and its gunna cost more too(plan ahead!)

FYI just for future reference...chevys small block pully selction was all over the board for long water pump...
Depending on the vehicle pully depth can be from 1/16 to 1/8 different....
I have thousands of pully and can prove this.....all from chevys!
Welcome to CHR. I think that you need to hook up your vacuum advance. At part throttle when cruising you have less air and fuel in each cylinder, and the air-fuel mixture is not as densely packed...
